Spoken Chinese is designed for adults who wish to learn the Chinese language, especially spoken Chinese, to meet the needs of social and business interaction in daily life. This course is designed for those who have little knowledge of the Chinese language and also for those who speak Chinese dialects only.
The course teaches Chinese phonetics in Hanyu Pinyin. Students will learn the simple, compound, nasal and head-compound vowels, the labial, dental, guttural, palatal, retroflex and dental sibilant consonants , and the semi-vowels and unit syllables.
The conversational part of the course deals with basic words, expressions and sentences, presented in the form of dialogues about everyday communicative situations, e.g. making telephone calls, asking for directions and enquiring about public transport. Students will be able to practise conversations on topics like meals, marketing, entertainment and travel.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to pronounce any Chinese word with the aid of Hanyu Pinyin, and will have learned about 1,500 commonly-used words and expressions. They will then be able to engage in simple conversations.
